UPC vs. GTIN: What Brands Need to Know

Understand the relationship between UPCs, GTINs and barcode symbols so your team can use the right terminology when preparing retail and promotional materials.

UPC and GTIN are often used interchangeably in everyday conversation, but they do not mean exactly the same thing. Understanding the distinction can make conversations with retailers, designers, printers and barcode service providers much clearer.

What Is a GTIN?

GTIN stands for Global Trade Item Number. It is an identification number used to identify trade items. GTINs can exist in different lengths depending on the application and data structure being used.

What Is a UPC?

UPC commonly refers to the Universal Product Code system used widely in North American retail. In practical discussions, people may use “UPC” to refer to both the product identifier and the familiar linear barcode that carries it, which is one reason the terminology can become confusing.

How UPC and GTIN Relate

A UPC-A symbol commonly encodes a 12-digit GTIN, often referred to as a GTIN-12. In other words, GTIN describes the identification number, while the barcode symbol is the machine-readable representation used to carry data for scanning.

The Number and the Barcode Are Not the Same Thing

Having the correct identification number does not automatically mean the barcode artwork is ready for production. The number must be encoded into the appropriate symbol, and that symbol still needs suitable dimensions, quiet zones, contrast and print quality for its intended application.

Why Terminology Matters During Artwork Production

If one team member asks for a “UPC” while another expects a GTIN or a finished barcode graphic, files can move through production with different assumptions. Clearly identify whether the project needs an identification number, barcode artwork, verification, or all of those items.

What Should Brands Confirm Before Production?

Confirm the identifier that should be encoded, the required barcode type, where the symbol will be used, the available print area and any retailer or program-specific requirements. Final artwork should then be reviewed in the context of the actual production piece.

Does a GTIN Guarantee a Barcode Will Scan?

No. Correct identification data and barcode print quality are separate considerations. A symbol can contain the intended data yet still have artwork or production issues that affect scanning. That is why barcode review and verification can be valuable before launch.

Where Barcode Verification Fits In

Once the appropriate identifier and symbol are established, verification can evaluate the produced barcode more systematically. Read How GS1 Barcode Verification Works for a closer look at that process.
